Abraxas – King of the gold dragons.
Alaric – A hunter and master shaman who raises orphaned Kadin.
Angkalon – King of the black dragons.
Aradan: House of Aradan – Royal house of the Alvar, ruling tribe of the elvin nation.
Aric – A prince, older brother of Prince Kadin, son of Princess Meria, grandson of King Dacian.
Aslief – An elf. A captain, commander of an elvin border force.
Baron of Caemlann – Ruler of the city of Caemlann. Not yet seen in the story.
Brianus – Childhood friend of King Dacian.
Cadfael: Master Cadfael – The master shaman at the Guild Hall in Caemlann. A very old dwarf. A member of the Damarrk High Council and thus a lord and allied with the Alvar or Elvin people, Kadin’s people. An old, trusted friend and teacher of Alaric’s. Note: Cadfael is a customary Welsh name.
Dacian – King of the Alvar, head of the royal household of Aradan.
Dagurx Ironchain – A goblin, the right hand of Rakuzm Mtedas, current leader of the goblin clan chiefs.
Dunstan – A caravan master, that is, a leader of a wagon train, encountered in Chapter 07.
Eldarion – An elf. A lieutenant, second in command, under Aslief.
Eloron – King of Kronar. Alaric and Eloron grew up as childhood friends.
Evan – A lieutenant of the royal guard serving in Caemlann. Prince of Kronar, fourth son of King Eloron of Kronar.
Farwalker Redbush – Alvar chancellor, descended from a Hazar.
Fychan ap Caradog – A human captain; the detail commander of border guards in the barony of Wildon. Kail is a lieutenant, his second in command. The “ch” is pronounced as a strong h-like sound, or as a k followed by an h, as in Stackhouse.
Galeru – King of the silver dragons.
Haditha – A human man, master of a metalworker’s shop in the city of Wildon.
Hastahli – Kail’s great golden hawk. The name, in this context, means something like “Dawning” or “Sunlight,” from Choctaw and Alabama-Coushatta sources.
Ieuan – Captain in the royal house guards, formerly lieutenant in the wilderness scouts.
Kadin – Last child of an Alvar high priestess; quarter Asrai, mostly elvin; orphaned at about 11 equivalent years.
Kadin ab Alaric – Kadin asks Alaric if Kadin can call him Dad, and Alaric has Kadin officially recorded as his foster son in the Shaman’s Guild records. Origin: Welsh tradition: ab or ap meant “son of”.
Kail – An elvin metalworker and swordsmith, with the skills of a master, but not yet officially recognized, because of Metalworker’s Guild rules regarding minimum age. He is about 16 equivalent years old, or 48 actual years old, with a slim but muscled build, brown hair, and green eyes. Kail is a member of the Wildon border guard.
Kail ap Lannett – An elvin lieutenant, second in command of a detail from the barony of Wildon, in the border guard of the kingdom of Kronar.
Kalseru – A black dragonling, the representative of the red and black dragons to Farwalker Redbush.
Lannett – A dwarven master metalworker and swordsmith, retired and quite old. Kail’s adoptive father. Master Lannett is from the village of Cauldera, in the Iron Hills, and is a Damarrk lord.
Masanari – An Alvar master sword-maker and master shaman.
Meria – Mother of Kadin, Alvar, the High Priestess of the elvin goddess Vindayin.
Midnight – Kail’s dire wolf. His fur is deep black.
Mihael – A secondary echelon metalworker at Kail’s shop.
Morgan ab Euderyn – Part time student of Alaric, a secondary echelon shaman, receives Alaric and Kadin at the Shaman’s Guild Hall in Caemlann.
Onorthach – The leader of the orc clans.
Papa Noel – A figure similar to Santa Claus, Father Christmas, or the Yule Father.
Rakuzm Mtedas – Current leader of the goblin clan chiefs.
Rhodri – Formerly supplied golden cremini mushrooms to Mr. Tunstall, like Alaric. Lived southwest of the Splitrock Knolls. Killed by goblins in a raid on his farm; he was reportedly drawn and quartered.
Rician of Dunharrow – A master echelon warrior adept who commissions a sword to be made by Kail.
Riordan – Friend and eventual foster brother of Prince Aric. A squire, and a page in the Aradan royal household.
Rory – A secondary echelon metalworker at Kail’s shop.
Severra – Aunt of Prince Aric.
Tathir – Clan leader of the royal house of Aradan, a seer who proclaims the Prophecy of Kadin.
Tunstall: Mr. Llwyd ap Tunstall – Older, grey-haired and heavyset shopkeeper who sells Alaric’s preserved cremini mushrooms; a tough negotiator, but they typically come to an agreement.
Vindayin – Elvin goddess of the forest and green places.
Wallace – Sergeant of the guard at Deva.
Willem – Captain of the guard at Deva.
