Friendships -- a flash fiction story by Colin Kelly

You can have all kinds of friends. But what kind is the most important?

Friendships are like the layers of an onion. On the outside are occasional friends. As you peel away that layer the next layer has casual friends. As you continue to peel away layers you’ll find that each layer has friends who are closer and more important. When you reach the innermost layer, the layer that surrounds you the core, those friendships are the most important, your best friends. But an onion isn't very useful with just the core and innermost layer. You need the entire onion with all of its layers, like you need all of your layers of friends.
