Us and Them
By Blue / Ben W. ~ 2005-12-09
- Ones and twos and groups of us and them.
- How big a group is “us?”
- How big a group is “them?”
- Why does it matter anyway?
- Just who is us or them?
- Are we so small that they don’t fit?
- Do we become a group of one alone?
- How many are groups of “them?”
- How shameful to divide, exclude, deny “them” as part of “us.”
- How wrong and lonely too.
- How unlovely and unloving.
- The next time you act like they are not welcome,
- Not good enough for us,
- Consider if we are “them” and they are “us.”
- And when you tell me or him or her,
- That “they” are not good enough for “us,”
- Please pause to contemplate:
- You just might find,
- That I and he and she,
- Are they instead of we or you.
- And stranger still, oh Stranger,
- You just might find that
- You are one of them,
- Not one of us,
- Nor even one of you.
- So learn this lesson well,
- Stranger friend or friendly stranger:
- There is no us nor them,
- No him or her or it,
- Nor even you or me,
- Nor one alone.
- We are all us and all them.
- We are one whole together,
- Whether holy or unholy.
- So therefore say to strangers,
- “Hello, guest;” and “Hello, friend.”
- For they are “us” and we are “them.”
- Stranger friends and friendly strangers be.
- Or as a wise and weary Pogo possum said,
- “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”
