Tumbleweeds and the Wind
By Blue / Ben W.
~ 2008-05-17
- Our lives may seem sometimes, like tumbleweeds,
- Directionless and uprooted, a twisted mess,
- Tossed lost and dead without purpose,
- By the changing, faithless winds.
-
- Sometimes, we may feel we are chasing the wind,
- As futile as following the tumbleweeds.
- What the wind brings, what use is it,
- To ourselves or those around us?
-
- Yet the wind carries more,
- It exists, though we can’t see it.
- It carries sounds and smells and smoke,
- Great messages for those who can read them.
-
- It carries seeds to plant new life,
- To nourish and shelter those around.
- Though some fall short or grow to weeds,
- Even they are not without meaning.
-
- Some find beauty and purpose in weeds
- And know they are not ugly or useless.
- Other seeds become trees and forests,
- While others become crops of the field.
-
- Yes the wind carries more,
- It exists, though we can’t see it.
- It uplifts birds and bees, butterflies and fireflies,
- The great and small alike.
-
- It is not as random or faithless or purposeless
- As we sometimes fear, in our angry breaths.
- The wind is directed by a higher purpose, as are we.
- We are not merely tumbleweeds, or chaff on the winds.
-
- Find rest and a place to take root.
- Find ways for your seeds to come out and grow.
- For you will be a tree that becomes a forest,
- And a plant that feeds and shelters.
-
- Your kindred, by birth or by choice,
- Will share your life and love and ideas.
- Thus will be born a great nation
- Descended by what seeds you sow.
-
- Now if, tomorrow, the winds uproot you again,
- And toss you, carelessly and unwanted, in another direction,
- Know that you will find new lands and new people,
- Wherever the changing winds send you, heed their message.
-
- So, wanderer, as you wonder, remember this,
- Whatever comes of your seed in the winds.
- You will have a purpose for a time appointed,
- And then you will be sent to new and fertile ground.
-
- Your life is not aimless, nor your death, nor after.
- It only seems that way, in the howling of a dust-devil.
- While you walk or roll or fly this world, then,
- Seek to do what good you can, while you’re here.
