Bricks
By Blue / Ben W.
~ 2006-02-17
- These bricks were a wall
- I built around myself
- Now I take them down
- One by one, oh so slowly
- It’s such hard work
- The wall was bigger
- Taller, wider, thicker
- Than I intended
- When did it become
- Not what I wanted?
- Just something I did?
- These bricks were a wall
- Keeping others out
- Keeping me in
- A self-made prison
- Protection
- Against what wasn’t wrong
- Against who wouldn’t hurt
- Against myself also
- Now I tear them down
- How it tears me up
- Now and then the tears flow
- These bricks were a wall
- Now the sun shines through
- In glowing beams
- Showing through the gaps
- In pillars of light
- In luminous walls
- That need hold nothing in
- I blink in the sun
- I breathe fresh air
- Like a man released
- Freed from self-made bonds
- These bricks were a wall
- Now I’ll make them a solid foundation
- Now they’ll be steps and ramps
- Now they’ll be a road
- Forward, upward, beyond
- I’ll step on them
- To lift myself and others
- I’ve started the job
- It’s a labor of love
- Learning as I go
- Quality work takes time
- Each brick to improve
- The last brick in a lifetime
