Bricks

  1. These bricks were a wall
  2. I built around myself
  3. Now I take them down
  4. One by one, oh so slowly
  5. It’s such hard work
  6. The wall was bigger
  7. Taller, wider, thicker
  8. Than I intended
  9. When did it become
  10. Not what I wanted?
  11. Just something I did?
  13. These bricks were a wall
  14. Keeping others out
  15. Keeping me in
  16. A self-made prison
  17. Protection
  18. Against what wasn’t wrong
  19. Against who wouldn’t hurt
  20. Against myself also
  21. Now I tear them down
  22. How it tears me up
  23. Now and then the tears flow
  25. These bricks were a wall
  26. Now the sun shines through
  27. In glowing beams
  28. Showing through the gaps
  29. In pillars of light
  30. In luminous walls
  31. That need hold nothing in
  32. I blink in the sun
  33. I breathe fresh air
  34. Like a man released
  35. Freed from self-made bonds
  37. These bricks were a wall
  38. Now I’ll make them a solid foundation
  39. Now they’ll be steps and ramps
  40. Now they’ll be a road
  41. Forward, upward, beyond
  42. I’ll step on them
  43. To lift myself and others
  44. I’ve started the job
  45. It’s a labor of love
  46. Learning as I go
  47. Quality work takes time
  48. Each brick to improve
  49. The last brick in a lifetime
